How to support ecotourism in Nepal?

Ecotourism means travelling responsibly so that the environment of the travelling destination and the culture of the host community may not have any adverse effect due to tourism. A trekking tour with us is always an eco friendly tour. We are affiliated with Kathmandu Environmental Education Project (KEEP) and are an active participant on their activities. KEEP is the single most dedicated organisation committed for eco friendly trekking in Nepal Himalaya. Here are simple and easy tips on how to support ecotourism.
  1. We do not use bottled water on the trek. The plastic bottles are the major source of the pollution in the Himalayas. According to a survey an average trekker drinks 72 liters of water on the Annapurna circuit trek. Nepal has no facilities to recycle these used plastic bottles. We request you to use iodine or your choice of purifier for drinking water.
  2. On the trails we prefer lodges using solar power for heating instead of firewood. Taking a hot shower heated by solar power instead of wood saves approximately one tree per shower. Note that it takes years for a tree to grow up on the cold alpine climate.
  3. On the camping treks we use alternative fuels like kerosene and gases.
  4. We carry back all the used batteries back to Kathmandu.
  5. We prefer to drink can beer over bottled beer. The cans are easier to bring back to garbage points than the bottles in the mountains. All these bottles and cans are carried back to Kathmandu on helicopter from these collection points.
  6. We keep the camp grounds garbage free. We burn the combustible garbage’s and carry the non combustibles to the nearest collection points.
  7. We request all the trekkers to respect the local culture and traditions. Nudity and public show of affection are better avoided. We request you not to encourage begging among the children. If you are interested to help a child, rather you can sponsor for his/her education.
